In conjunction with Literacy month, Ohlone will be participating in a Read-A-Thon sponsored by the student council. Our hope is that all students will set a goal with their parents, and participate by keeping track of the number of minutes & pages read on their Reading Log. There will be a donation jar in the office from November 2nd, Monday, through November 13th, Friday. Picture make-up day (for those who were absent on picture day or who want a "do-over") will be Thursday, November 5. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Farm Work day -- Saturday 11/7 Time: 9 am - 1 pm Come on out to the Farm to help with various projects. No experience necessary. Stop by for as long as you can. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hearing Screening -- Monday 11/9 The kinders, 2nd graders, and 5th graders will have their hearing checked during the school day. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ohlone Family Literacy Night -- Monday 11/9 Time: Monday, November 9th from 5 to 8 p.m. Place: Ohlone Library Family Literacy Night with a Strega Nona Dinner for $10 per family. Each family should bring their own plates, utensils, and cups. There will be activities celebrating literature inside and outside the Library including a program with local author and illustrator Christy Hale. The Book Fair will also be open, sponsored by Kepler's Bookstore, offering a huge collection of books and gifts inside the MP Room. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ohlone Fall Book Fair Sponsored by Kepler's Bookstore -- All Week! Place: Ohlone MP Room Kepler's Bookstore will provide a huge collection of books, games, and gifts available for purchase. But purchases made at Kepler's Bookstore in Menlo Park can benefit Ohlone all year long. In December, your budding chemist can create holiday gifts in our "Lotions and Potions" class, Thursday afternoons, 3:15pm, 12/3-12/17. Sign up now! Look for new topics starting in January, including "Special Effects", the science behind the movies, and "Microbeasts", investigating microscopic creatures. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Volunteer for Track Watch A volunteer track watch group which has been organized to deter suicides. You can help by signing up for a short shift watching the tracks. The effectiveness of a presence at a site that is a suicide hot spot has been researched and documented. Prevention by deterrence at a hot spot is likely to not only stop a suicide there, but may also prevent the suicide altogether. Volunteers must be over the age of 21. Volunteers monitor the tracks by sitting or standing on the sidewalk with a cell phone to call the police. They do not attempt to take anyone from the tracks. Please indicate that you are a parent interested in participating. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Stanford Study Seeks Mothers and Daughters Stanford Psychology Department's Mood and Anxiety Disorders Laboratory is currently conducting a study of mothers who have suffered from depression in the past and their 9-15 year old daughters to better understand how they think and process information. The long term goal of the study is to better improve treatments for emotional disorders. The study involves visiting Stanford University a few times to participate in interviews, game-like computer tasks and fill out questionnaires. Most girls also have a brain scan and take home a picture of their brain as a souvenir. $40/hour for 3-10 hours, over up to three visits. Palo Alto Community Child Care (PACCC) families, supporters and the community at large will dine out at participating restaurants, enjoy some delicious food and share a wonderful evening. Participating restaurants will then donate 10 - 25% of their evening's proceeds to PACCC. All funds raised by Dine For Kids directly support the 150-plus children currently enrolled in the PACCC Child Development Subsidy Program. Nov. 12, 6:30-8pm, Mitchell Park Community Center, 3800 Middlefield, Palo Alto City of Palo Alto Recreation presents a parent education workshop focused on increasing the resiliency of our youth and teens. Led by Project Cornerstone, the workshop will provide an overview of the assets, current Santa Clara County survey results, and ways to intentionally build assets in your life. In addition participants will develop skills that will help then be more effective in building assets at home and in their communities.
