Site Council Meeting, ASC Survey Results presentation, open to the whole school community!! When: Tuesday at 7:30 pm Where: Ohlone Library We will be discussing the results from the ASC (Assessment of School Climate) survey taken by over 260 parents, 130 students (3rd, 4th, and 5th graders), and 19 staff. Overall, our school's climate is very good, and we are very proud of our successes in the learning environment, loyalty, and empathy categories of the survey. Come join us to see the survey results in detail, and the areas we are targeting for improvement. We have a great school and want to make it even better. Speaking in Tongues -- Language Immersion Film -- Wed, Feb 10 When: Wednesday, February 10, at 7:00 p.m. Where: Escondido library, 890 Escondido, Palo Alto, CA 94305 Sponsored by Bill O and Gary Prehn, principal of Escondido Elementary School This is a terrific, insightful film that follows four students in different immersion programs in the San Francisco School District and explores the rewards and hurdles they face as they become bilingual. This is a great opportunity to enter their world and ask yourself, “today, is one language enough and is this the opportunity I want for my child?” Please, no small children. Green Team Update - Ohlone Students invited to submit tips on "Global Warming and Water Use" Our next set of green tips are going to cover the topic "Global Warming and Water Use". Most of you are becoming familiar with issues surrounding global warming, water scarcity and the need for conserving water. Thus, on behalf of the green team, we would like to invite the Ohlone students to submit any tips that they believe would address this topic or practices they already put in use today at home and school to save water. We will publish the collection of tips and suggestions from all of you in our next Arrow publication. Please have your parents email vaidya.prerana@gmail.com or please drop off the written tip(s) in the envelope provided in the office that says "Green Tips - Global Warming". Also, parents, please note that we're planning our next green awareness day to be on MAY 8th (same day as spring fling), So, please start saving and sorting all your electronics waste for that day. More details to follow! Ohlone Celebrates the Lunar New Year with a week of activities! Tues 2/16-Fri 2/19 Book Orders-- You should have received book order forms from your teachers providing you with the opportunity to purchase autographed copies of books by author and graphic artist Oliver Chin. He will be visiting the school and speaking to students at the Lunar New Year assembly on Wed 2/17. The children have been enjoying his books in the Ohlone library for the past few weeks. Amongst his many titles are The Octonauts, a cute and clever series, and each year there is a new book featuring the animal of the zodiac. This year is the Year of the Tiger, but you can also order Year of the Dog, Pig, Rat, and Ox. Please turn in your order forms and checks to the office by Wed 2/10. Books will be distributed to classrooms following the assembly. Flowering Blossoms-- Celebrate the coming of spring by bringing in one flowering branch from your yard to decorate your classroom on Wed 2/17. Examples of common flowers currently in bloom include: daffodils, narcissus, camellia, hyacinth, plum, cherry, apricot, pluot, nectarine, or quince. Noontime Activities-- Weds-Fri during the lunch hour there will be arts and crafts tables for students to enjoy. On Wed learn to write a Chinese good luck character with brush and ink to hang on your door. On Thurs learn about your Chinese Zodiac animal and what that means about your personality. On Friday make a ribbon stick, paper lantern, or tamborine to wave at the dragon parade. Dragon Parade-- Parents are invited to attend and witness the debut of Ohlone's very own 70-foot-long dragon. Each classroom has decorated one section of fabric and has chosen a student to help embody it. Come enjoy the festivities on the blacktop Friday 2/19 at 2pm. Bring your bubble wrap for the simulated firecrackers. Mandatory Dragon Parade Rehearsal ONLY FOR STUDENTS CHOSEN BY THEIR CLASSROOMS (You know who you are). Please bring your signed permission slip. If your 5th grader is visiting, please make sure that his/her teacher is "ok" with the absence that morning. On the morning of the visitation, check in at the JLS Office. Please note that there will be plenty of opportunity to observe classroom activity, but that "shadowing" an individual student is not permitted and that these visitations are for the Connections' classrooms only. The group will discuss a wide range of issues and information will be provided regarding managing ADHD at home and at school. MOAH Workshop: Whisper In the Wind: How To Build a Crystal Radio Sundays from thru Feb. 21, 1-3:30 pm, MOAH 321 Homer, Palo Alto At this Museum of American Heritage workshop, students build their own crystal radio sets, winding coils, drilling a mounting board and placing all components on it, and then wiring the set according to a schematic. Students learn radio history dating back to Marconi and Tesla, basic radio theory, modulation, how headphones work, and how to read schematics. Ages 10 and up; $65 members/$75 non-members.
