May Fête Children’s Parade -- Sat 5/1
Save the date.  Sat. May 1, 10am, downtown Palo Alto.

Palo Alto Recreation invites you to the 88th Annual May Fête Children’s Parade. This year’s theme, “Free to be…Me!” is all about honoring all the ways that our children and youth express themselves in a joyful and positive manner along life’s journey. The morning will be filled with spirited entertainment from local high and junior high school marching bands, floats, and thousands of children marching, skating, and cycling through downtown.

Following the parade, join Partners in Education and celebrate our schools with food, music, and games at the 8th Annual PiE Fair at Addison School until 1pm.

The "Drive Less Challenge" continues through May 6th

Show your care for the planet---and our local piece of it---by walking, biking, riding the bus, or carpooling to school.

This year PAUSD is joining local communities in the "Drive Less Challenge" from April 22 through May 6. The Drive Less Challenge is a social competition to reduce the amount of driving – the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions and the only source of traffic congestion --- in the Bay Area . It is a project of community green teams in Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Mountain View, and Burlingame. See the website drivelesschallenge.com to sign up for the game-like contest, to log your daily, non-car trips, to share stories about alternatives to driving, and to get inspiration from other people's stories.

Simulation Days -- Calling All Patriotic Parents -- 5/18
On May 18, 19 and 20, our 4/5th grade classrooms will be participating in a Colonial Simulation. History really comes alive in the months leading up to the simulation. Students are taking part in many activities including a colonial go-around, storytelling from historical characters, learning trades, taking on a persona for the simulation and earning the cost of their passage to the New World. During the 3-day simulation, students will establish their settlements and work towards becoming a self-sufficient colony.  We'd like to invite you to participate in our simulation

Trade Day Helpers for Tuesday, May 18th, 11:30 - 3:00:
  Can you run a trade, either as a master or an assistant. We can train you.
You will be supervising approximately 10 children.

Raising Kids in Our 24/7 Digital World -- Tues, 4/27

Parents, learn about the influence of media on how kids think, play, learn, and communicate. Bicycle Traffic Skills Classes -- Sat 5/1, or Sun 5/2
Choose date:  Sat. May 1, Sun. May 2. 1-5:30pm.
Classes for children age 10-14 and their parents, offered by City of Palo Alto Recreation Dept. Classes will cover the basics of traffic law; basic bike and helmet fitting; common types of bike crashes, & how to avoid them; how to position yourself properly on the road; how to let drivers know your intentions; and how to deal with left turns & 4-way stops.
One parent is required to register and attend from each family.

Summer Math Camp Open House -- 5/3
We would like to invite parents and students to our Open House which will be held on May 3rd, Monday, at 7:00 pm in JLS Middle School (480 I. Meadow Dr., Palo Alto) Room 730.

This is a great opportunity to meet with our teachers, learn more about Classic Math School overall teaching principles and ideas as well as School-Year-Round programs.
Your questions will be answered, your students will be offered a free Placement Test, mandatory for students in grades 4 and above, but recommended for all students. Light refreshment will be served.

The Open House Night is also the time, when we expect you to complete your enrollment process to secure your child's space in the Summer Math Camp. Please be advised that we do not accept credit cards, only checks or cash.
We are looking forward to meeting you and your child on May 3rd!

Girls Leadership Institute Workshops -- Tues 5/4 (start)
The Duveneck PTA is proud to sponsor a series of workshops to help support the social development of girls. Want to empower your daughter to make real friends, communicate honestly and directly, and be her real self? The Girls Leadership Institute will introduce her to the critical skills she needs to speak and listen with courage, improve parent-daughter communication patterns, and establish strong habits
for her to take into her friendships. She'll receive personal attention in these small groups and will take home great memories and life-changing skills.

CAC Parent Ed: Cognitive Therapies presented by a panel of therapists -- Wed 5/5

Cognitive enhancement with programs such as PACE, Brainware Safari, Cogmed, Interactive Metronome, and Captain’s Log can provide many benefits to all students. These programs use brain-based learning and assist those that need extra boosts with their auditory and visual functions and short and long term memory. The Future of Public Education in California - A Candidate Forum for the Assembly District 21 Seat -- Sat 5/8

Josh Becker, Founder of New Cycle Capital, Rich Gordon, Supervisor in San Mateo County, and Yoriko Kishimoto, former Mayor of Palo Alto, are in a hotly contested primary race for California's 21st Assembly District to replace Ira Ruskin, who will be termed out at the end of 2010. Come hear their thoughts as they respond to pertinent education issues of the day. Cantabile Youth Singers, an organization of five choirs serving children ages 4 to 18, is opening enrollment for the fall semester. Classes include age appropriate ear training, music theory, and vocal technique, as well as movement, performance, and fun. Cub Scout Day Camp -- 6/21 - 6/25
Calling all boys in Kindergarten through 4th grades – come to Cub Scout Day Camp June 21-25 and travel through time! Go to the Zulu Wars in Africa! Visit the North and South Poles. Build and sink your own Titanic and help us dig the Panama Canal. Assist the Wright brothers and Mr. Ford in making models of the latest modes of transportation. Summer Taiko at Stanford 2010 -- 7/5 - 7/9
Mon. July 5 - Fri. July 9, 9am-2:30pm, Braun Music Center, Stanford.
For 9 to 14 year-olds who are beginners or who can play with "Beginner's Mind". The goal of the camp is to introduce beginners to North American taiko, a dynamic and relatively new Asian American art form with roots in Japan.

The philosophy of the camp is to provide an environment for participants which creates a sense of community and a positive attitude towards diversity and creativity. $375, includes instruction by members of San Jose Taiko and Stanford Taiko, bachi (drumsticks), mid-morning snacks, and camp t-shirt. 2010 Synchro Summer Camp; Synch into Summer!
