Pirates of Penzance -- Mon 5/10
When: 7:30 pm
Where: MP Room
Tickets:  Free, but reserve them here: https://spreadsheets1.google.com/ccc?key=tTAXdSpGUufBAu6DQhcfF9g&hl=en

One of the most popular operas ever written, this swashbuckling classic tells the tale of the pirate apprentice Frederic, who has a few surprises in store as he turns 21! Featuring tender-hearted pirates, bumbling policemen, an eccentric Major General and beautiful young maidens who wouldn't dream of marrying anybody who isn't rich, all contributing to one of the most uproarious operettas in the history of musical theatre... It's Gilbert at his witty best, with some of Sullivan's most memorable music.

Police Focus on School Zones for "Operation Safe Passage" -- 5/10 thru 5/24
The Palo Alto Police Department will be participating in "Operation Safe Passage" starting May 10, through the 24th. The Palo Alto police run this special program three times a year in order to increase the safety of students commuting to and from school. During "Operation Safe Passage," police strictly enforce traffic violations in and around school zones during peak commute hours. They focus on the following violations by motorists and commuting students:
  • Failing to stop for school buses with flashing stoplights
  • Speeding
  • Failing to yield to pedestrians
  • Jaywalking
  • Bicycling without a properly worn helmet (juveniles)
  • Violating seat belt and child restraint regulations
  • Texting or using cell phones
  • Violating stop sign regulations
The program is aimed to remind all commuters to slow down and exercise extra care in school zones. It is up to us, as a community, to ensure that our children stay safe!

Note: The goal of this program is preventive enforcement, NOT just to hand out tickets.  Hence this reminder. -- Glenn

Farm Work Day -- Sun 5/16

All the rain has been wonderful for the plants AND weeds. We look forward to seeing you out on the farm this weekend.  -- Brian

Ohlone Yearbook -- another chance
(If you already ordered back in August via the "One-Check form", you can skip this.)

The yearbook is a great way to share the memories of life at Ohlone. It includes pictures of all the children and activities of each classroom, a photographic record of major events throughout the year, group classroom photos, and much more.

If you did not order a yearbook last August on your One-Check Form, it's not too late! You have one more opportunity to do so! If you don't remember whether you ordered one, you can check the yearbook order list posted on the Office window. If you would like to order one now, there are order forms in the Office. Stop by and pick one up. Or, you can print the order form immediately below.

The cost is $25 per yearbook (up from $20 on the One-Check Form). You must attach your payment (cash or check) to the order form and put it in the office inbox or in the manila folder titled "Yearbook Order Forms." Orders are due Friday, May 21st.

There will be a very limited supply available in the office after June 8 for anyone who did not pre-order. The cost at that time will be $30 per book.

Any questions, please contact Susan Bush at susancbush@gmail.com or Sharon Delman at sharon.delman@gmail.com.

Thank You Palo Alto from the Measure A Campaign
We did it! Measure A passed with a resounding 79.4% of Palo Alto voters saying YES to public education.

A warm and grateful thanks to parents, teachers, staff and students who made it happen. Thanks for voting YES and returning your ballot on time. Thanks for placing a lawn sign in your yard. Thanks for delivering lawn signs. Thanks for donating money to the campaign. Thanks to our many teachers, parents and students who made thousands of calls from the phone banks. Thanks for reminding your neighbors to vote.  This was truly a district-wide effort and the results show it.  Measure A would not have passed without YOUR support. Thank you so very, very much.

New Friday Night Film Series - Food And the Environment -- Starts 5/14
We're back, by popular demand! Don't miss our next "Films of Hope and Vision" film series starting Friday May 14, sponsored by Acterra, Silicon Valley Action Network, World Centric, the South Bay Slow Food Movement, and Transition Palo Alto. Lively discussions will follow each film.

Free Friday Night Film Series at World Centric, 7:30 - 9:30 P.M.

May 14 -- Power of Community -- When the Soviet Union collapsed, Cuba couldn't export its sugar or import oil. This film shows how Cuba weathered the crisis. Powerful, insightful, and uplifting. Don't miss this one! Come again, even if you saw the film last time - we'll have more great discussion!

May 21 -- King Corn -- King Corn is a fascinating feature documentary about two friends, one acre of corn, and the subsidized crop that drives our fast-food nation...

May 28 -- Two Angry Moms -- Two Angry Moms shows not only what is wrong with school food; it offers strategies for overcoming roadblocks and getting healthy, good tasting, real food into school cafeterias. The movie explores the roles the federal government, corporate interests, school administration and parents play in feeding our country's school kids.  (Note from Stacey A: this film addresses the grass-roots, parent-led movement to get healthier school lunches provided in public school districts - it's a great, motivating film about what we can & should be doing in Palo Alto! )

June 4 -- Establishing a Food Forest -- This is a great how-to film about how to establish and maintain a food forest, one of the main sustainable systems that will allow us to inhabit this planet indefinitely. Geoff Lawton of the permaculture research institute has created a real masterpiece with this film, condensing his encyclopedic knowledge and experience of these systems into a 'how to do it' instructional video.

June 11 -- In Transition -- An inspirational film about how local communities, like ours, can respond to peak oil and global warming while building community and enjoying life. Come again, even if you saw the film last time - we'll have more great discussion!

June 18 -- Potluck (Let's share food that's been grown within 100 miles !)

New Venue: World Centric, 2121 Staunton Ct., Palo Alto (El Camino Real & Stanford -- behind JJ&F Market)

Time: 7:30 - 9:30 P.M.

Hope to see you at the movies - and don't forget to invite your friends!
