Simulation Days -- Items & Help Needed
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Colonial Simulation Days are this Tuesday - Thursday
Colonial Simulation Days -- Tues - Thurs On May 18, 19 and 20, our 4/5th grade classrooms will be participating in a Colonial Simulation. History really comes alive in the months leading up to the simulation. Students are taking part in many activities including a colonial go-around, storytelling from historical characters, learning trades, taking on a persona for the simulation and earning the cost of their passage to the New World. During the 3-day simulation, students will establish their settlements and work towards becoming a self-sufficient colony. Ohlone PTA Executive Board Meeting Tues, 5/18 Monthly meeting of the PTA Executive Board, 7:30 pm at Ohlone Honor Your Teacher through PiE by May 21st In our community, we celebrate outstanding teachers, who work every day to challenge, inspire, and support our children throughout their education. Now you can give thanks to your children's teachers by giving back. Our Honor Your Teacher campaign funds innovative teaching projects selected through the PiE Teacher Grant program. Each teacher you name will be notified that you have honored them. We suggest a $50 donation per teacher, but any and all contributions are welcome. Donate online at: www.papie.org/hytdonate.html Ohlone Farm Potluck - Volunteer Thank you -- Tues 5/25 As the school year draws to a close, we would like to celebrate all the volunteer efforts at the Ohlone Farm. If you have helped at the farm this year by taking care of animals, helping at a weekend farm work day, supporting the farmers market, volunteering as a handyperson or attending a farm council meeting, please bring your family to the annual volunteer thankyou potluck at the Farm. It will be held on Tuesday May 25th 2010 from 5pm to 7pm. Please bring a dish to share (and your own reusable dishes if possible). Immediately following the celebration will be the last Farm Council meeting of the year. The meeting will be held in the Library conference room, starting at 7pm. If you haven't attended one this year, please stop in and hear about what's happening over the summer and plans for next year! Thank you for all you dedication, commitment and hard work throughout the year - the Farm would not be sustainable without families like yours. Hope to see you all on the Farm! Ohlone Fundraiser at Chevys, Mountain View, Wednesday, May 26, 2010, 11am to 9pm Have you missed all the Ohlone restaurant fundraisers this year? Do you need a break from cooking? Why not share a meal with friends and family and raise money for Ohlone all at the same time? Restaurant fundraisers have raised over $1000 for Ohlone this year. We can do better than that! Attend Ohlone’s last restaurant fundraiser of the year on Wednesday, May 26, at Chevys, in Mountain View, at 2116 W. El Camino Real, just north of Rengstorff Avenue (650-691-9955). Bring in the attached flyer, and Chevys will donate 25% of your check to Ohlone. Flyer: http://events.pausd.org/cal/displaymedia.aspx?whatToDo=attch&id=5 The fundraiser is valid for lunch and dinner (11am to 9pm) and extends to take-out orders, too. The more people who participate, the more money Ohlone makes, so invite your Ohlone and non-Ohlone friends and family to meet you at Chevys or order take-out. Need other ideas? You can call ahead (650-691-9955) and reserve a table for the families in your classroom that can meet you. Or, you can have an adults-only lunch at Chevys that day. Do a good deed for another family and bring their kids with your family to Chevys that day. Be creative! Remember: You must bring in the flyer for Ohlone to receive the donation. Questions? Contact Sylvia Star-Lack at star_lack@yahoo.com. Retirement Celebration -- Thurs 5/27 @ 3:30 pm All employees retiring from PAUSD at the end of 2009-2010 will be honored. Event will take place in the Sculpture Garden at the Art Center, 1313 Newell Road. Ohlone Yearbook -- another chance
(If you already ordered back in August via the "One-Check form", you can skip this.) The yearbook is a great way to share the memories of life at Ohlone. It includes pictures of all the children and activities of each classroom, a photographic record of major events throughout the year, group classroom photos, and much more. If you did not order a yearbook last August on your One-Check Form, it's not too late! There are order forms in the Office, and in the last Arrow (page 2): http://ohloneweb.com/arrow/OhloneArrow2009-10_15.pdf or here: http://ohloneweb.com/flyers/2010%20Ohlone%20Yearbook%20Order%20Form.doc Any questions, please contact Susan Bush at susancbush@gmail.com or Sharon Delman at sharon.delman@gmail.com. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Resiliency Expert Dr. Ken Ginsburg, Now on DVD! This PTA Council DVD features TWO presentations by Dr. Ken Ginsburg --
Details & order form: http://info.paloaltopta.org/docs/100507GinsburgDVD.pdf More on Ken Ginsburg: http://www.paloaltoonline.com/news/show_story.php?id=16244 City Proposes Cutting School Crossing Guards and PAPD Traffic Team -- Meeting Tues 5/18 Two proposed cuts to the City of Palo Alto budget are of particular relevance to the school community:
If you would like to weigh in on these choices, we're aware of three resources to point you to: - The Palo Alto PTA Council, through its Safe Routes to School coalition, is requesting that the city not make these particular cuts, but keep the crossing guard and traffic team positions. Their position is spelled out on the web site http://saferoutes.paloaltopta.org/May2010/ProposedCuts.shtml - A Duveneck parent has started an online petition to the City Council in the hopes of gathering 1000 signatures supporting retaining the crossing guards and traffic team. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/2/support-adult-traffic-crossing-guards. - City Council and its committees are holding several meetings in the coming weeks about the budget. The two most relevant ones to this issue are the finance committee meeting this coming Tuesday, focusing on parts of the budget including the police department, and then the city council's budget review and public hearing on June 21:
"Let's Talk" sponsored by Community Advisory Committee for Special Education -- Mon, 5/17 Mon. May 17, 7:30-9pm, Boardroom, 25 Churchill, Palo Alto. Parents with children in the PAUSD Special Education programs are invited to a get-together (parents only). This will be an opportunity to meet other parents and ask questions. Network among parents who otherwise might feel isolated by having a child with troublesome behavior, learning disabilities, physical challenge, or sensory loss. Receive information about the District, Special Education, the IEP process, and mainstreaming. As parents, exchange with each other on a range of topics from dealing with spouses and siblings, to building self-esteem, and midst of all the challenges, finding joy in our children. New Friday Night Film Series - Food And the Environment -- 5/21, 5/28, ... We're back, by popular demand! Don't miss our next "Films of Hope and Vision" film series starting Friday May 14, sponsored by Acterra, Silicon Valley Action Network, World Centric, the South Bay Slow Food Movement, and Transition Palo Alto. Lively discussions will follow each film. Free Friday Night Film Series at World Centric, 7:30 - 9:30 P.M. May 21 -- King Corn -- King Corn is a fascinating feature documentary about two friends, one acre of corn, and the subsidized crop that drives our fast-food nation... May 28 -- Two Angry Moms -- Two Angry Moms shows not only what is wrong with school food; it offers strategies for overcoming roadblocks and getting healthy, good tasting, real food into school cafeterias. The movie explores the roles the federal government, corporate interests, school administration and parents play in feeding our country's school kids. (Note from Stacey A: this film addresses the grass-roots, parent-led movement to get healthier school lunches provided in public school districts - it's a great, motivating film about what we can & should be doing in Palo Alto! ) June 4 -- Establishing a Food Forest -- This is a great how-to film about how to establish and maintain a food forest, one of the main sustainable systems that will allow us to inhabit this planet indefinitely. Geoff Lawton of the permaculture research institute has created a real masterpiece with this film, condensing his encyclopedic knowledge and experience of these systems into a 'how to do it' instructional video. June 11 -- In Transition -- An inspirational film about how local communities, like ours, can respond to peak oil and global warming while building community and enjoying life. Come again, even if you saw the film last time - we'll have more great discussion! June 18 -- Potluck (Let's share food that's been grown within 100 miles !)
