Update: City Proposal to Cut Police Traffic Enforcement Team and Adult Crossing Guards Citywide -- Mon 6/21 Mon. June 21, 7pm, Budget Review and Public Hearing, Council Chambers, City Hall, 250 Hamilton Ave, Palo Alto. This year’s proposed city budget cuts included eliminating all Adult Crossing Guards city-wide and eliminating the entire Palo Alto Police Department Traffic Team. Taking away this support is likely to affect the safety of our children’s commute to school. At a recent meeting, the City Council Finance Committee made recommendations to reinstate funding for the adult crossing guards and four of the five PAPD Traffic Team Members. However, the Finance Committee is made up of four members of the nine-member City Council and only three members voted to support each of the recommendations; a minimum of five votes is needed to insure continued funding for the Adult Crossing Guards and PAPD Traffic Team. We're calling on parents to show up in force at the upcoming City Council Budget Review & Public Hearing on Monday, June 21 and write a flood of letters. This meeting is critically important because it will be the final budget hearing with the full City Council present. PTA Traffic Safety suggests that we show up with our bike helmets to identify ourselves. For more information on how you can help, see www.saferoutes.paloaltopta.org/May2010/ProposedCuts.shtml. Letters to City Council, City.Council@cityofpaloalto.org, make a difference. To receive email updates on this issue after school lets out, email Penny at pellson@pacbell.net.
